Chapter Four: Perspectives: General Public
Learning Objectives
The goal of this chapter is to obtain a better understanding of the American public and their perceptions of the correctional system. We want you to understand how the perceptions of the American people affect the prison system. In this chapter you will:
- Examine the differences in the general public opinion on incarceration
- Understand the general publics’ opinion on prison conditions and the treatment of inmates within the walls of that facility.
- Examine the different amenities that are obtained by an incarcerated individual throughout their incarceration.
- Identify the perceptions of those who have been in prison and those who have not.
- Show whether the American public believes that the system has to become harsher or if it is too harsh.
