Chapter Three: Measuring Perceptions of and Attitudes on Incarceration

Learning Objectives

The United States of America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. The way popular culture and the media depicts the prison system to the public is something that should be taken into account when trying to understand what happens within those walls. Although we only get a glimpse into these facilities it allows us to differentiate between the media and the real world. The goals for this chapter are to:

  1. To understand the perspectives that students had before going on a carceral tour.
  2. Examine the differences between student opinions on incarceration and correctional facilities before and after a tour.
  3. Understand the difference between a jail and a prison.
  4. Debunk some myths in the prison system.
  5. Examine what perspectives are changed due to going on a carceral tour.
